The Golden Temple is a Sikh Temple located in Amritsar, India. Popularly referred to as the Golden Temple (or God's Temple), the Temple is the most important place of worship in the Sikh faith, as well as one of the oldest of the Sikh gurudwaras. The fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das Ji, is the founder and planner of the city of Amritsar (then Ramdaspur), as well as the person who designed the temple. The city is often called Guru Di Nagri, both for this reason and because the Golden Temple is located in the town.
The Golden Temple was built in 1574 when the Mughal Emperor Akbar Shah gave the land as a wedding gift to the daughter of the third Guru, Guru Amar Das, who married Bhai Jetha, who later became the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das Ji. Under the leadership of Guru Ram Das Ji, the pond was enlarged, the surrounding town expanded, and then the Temple complex was completed entirely during the reign of the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
The Golden Temple encompasses more than a single temple, a large complex; In the middle of the complex is the temple. There is an artificial lake surrounding the temple, which is called Amritsar, that is, "Sacred Water Lake" or "The Fountain of Immortality." There are entrances to the Golden Temple from all four sides, symbolizing the importance of tolerance and openness. Within the Temple complex are many shrines of past Sikh Gurus, Saints, and martyrs. There are three sacred trees, each associated with a historical event or Sikh saint.
The Golden Temple is one of the most vibrant cities in India, as it is located at the junction of railways and important highways connecting the capital New Delhi to the neighboring regions, and mainly contains the Golden Temple, the pilgrimage center of the Sikhs, and the Durgiana Temple, which was built by the Hindus as a minister. In the city, which also has an airport, there are Khalsa College and Glancy Medical College founded by the British, High School of Dentistry, various educational institutions affiliated with Punjab University, and some technical schools. Today, the Golden Temple, which is one of the few carpet and weaving centers of India, is primarily known for jewelry and small handicrafts, silk, and leatherwork and is also famous for the tourist trade.
