In addition to the war they fight with guns, the soldiers also face another war. They need to fight a spiritual war against reality in order to protect their souls from the destruction caused by war.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is the only World War game where you don’t need to use a gun to fight enemies. Instead, it focuses on adventure and puzzles. You frequently traverse battlefields from Germany to France by resolving puzzles, gathering supplies, and eliminating impediments to progress. For example, you can obliterate obstructions with a hand grenade. A puzzle game— but one that's difficult to solve. I don't get stuck in a single puzzle for hours. A few attempts let me solve most puzzles, even the notoriously hard ones. I imagine that a puzzle with too many complications will lose relevance if it frustrates the player's emotional circuits. The plot of Valiant Hearts: The Great War does this well.

The game's narrative opens with the Austro-Hungarian Empire's war on Serbia in 1914 after the crown prince of Austria was murdered. From there, players can choose from several different perspectives when playing the game. Due to geopolitical reasons, France forced German citizens to leave their land. Karl, a German man living in France, married Marie, a French national and father to Victor. Karl only 18 years old when he was expelled from France. He also joined the German army forced to fight. Emile met Karl again during the border war. As his father-in-law, Karls wife Marie is Emile's boss. Emile goes to pre-war training to learn the game's controls as a means of controlling him. But Emile ended up resigning from the army after Karl encouraged him to join the French army instead. After Lord Von Dorf's army is defeated by the Allies, Karl flees with the Germans in tow. Emile was also injured during the battle and was saved by Walt, a German dog that had been trapped in rubble. Freddie, an American soldier who would later serve in the French Army in an effort to get back at Von Dorf for commanding a bombing that killed his wife. Anna, a military nurse, continues to spy on Von Dorf. He forces her father to create weapons for him by imprisoning him in a laboratory.

Before the war, Karl lived in France with his German wife named Marie and son named Victor. The game focuses on Karl's quest to reunite with his family as he fights to stay alive during WWII. Emile is Karl's father-in-law; he married Karl's mother. During the war, Emile constantly searched for Karl to ask him to help his son-in-law return home. After his wife lost her life in a German army bombing, an American volunteer joins the French army with the desire to exact revenge. Anna wants to use her military nursing service to rescue her father Von Dorf, who was captured by him. She plans to use this opportunity to create weapons for him. No one knows the German Shepherd dog's past, except for the characters in the game. Players can control Walt for special missions if instructed to do so by a character in the game.

Although the game features 2D graphics with a cartoonish appearance, it achieved success thanks to its portrayal of characters with moving images. Each character expressed their emotions in a way that moved hearts, making Valiant Hearts: The Great War an exceptional image-focused game. With great intensity and authentic accuracy, the battlefield scene showcases its drama. Additionally, the game wisely uses its characters' hushed dialogue to drive home its emotional message.

The music featured in the game is heroic and inspiring due to being created by well-known musicians. Plus, it's impossible to ignore how impressive it is that you can feel touched by an inextricable musical background. By encouraging players to use headphones to the best effect, the game provides an auditory experience that enhancesplayers’ emotional attachment.
